The modern ladies' figure has altered considerably, we now undertake far more strenuous work than ladies in Victorian times.   All that mucking out has strengthened our shoulders and broadened our waistlines, and its all muscle - honest!!

Victorian 'stays' for riding or sport were shorter and lighter than for normal daily wear.

When constructing a costume I assume that your figure is not totally 'hourglass' as it would be if you were tightly laced up.
